I seem have solved my problem regarding which dizzy to fit my red 253.

After a few calls to the "trickers" as my 3 year old calls them, I quickly established that it is difficult to find a decent Holden electronic dizzy from a blue or black motor, let alone find a stuffed one! AND it would cost around $200 - $250, if I indeed located one.

So I got on to a brand new replacement unit made by "Zenith". It comes complete.

The two types avaliable are replica Holden type which look identical to the aforementioned blue/black motor types. About $280 Note here, you also need to purchase a suitable coil for electronic ignition and possibly leads.

The second type is a Chev HEI replica, with the built in coil pack in the top of the dizzy. It uses the larger Chev cap and different lead attachment to the Holden setup. It is simple to wire up with two connections only: IGN +ve and TACHO +ve. You also utilise the existing ballast system. This is the cheaper way, 'cause you do not need to purchase a coil. Around $300.

I now find that the engine flexiblity is increased, ie into 5th gear for a greater period around town. Fuel economy should also improve. Also radio suppresion is no longer a problem, even though I now don't run a suppressor. On the whole the ute runs a lot better and is easier to start. Should have done it years ago........

The place I got my distributor from is A1 Automotive & Balancing, in Geelong, Victoria. Ph 03 52770383.

They also stock a large range of of V8 performance equipment.

power for elec dizzy

Hi Stephen. Use a 12v relay to supply the power to the dizzy. Wire the old yellow wire (that used to feed the old coil) to switch the relay on and get your 12v from where ever you find the easiest. I usually take it off the starter if it's a six and off the alternator if it's a V8. Hope this helps.

6 cycl VK ign.

There are two different distributors in VK sixes. The 3.3 EFI engine has a unit similar to VC-VH-WB blue motors (except for its advance curve) and will work well in a Red 6. However the dissy fitted to the 3.3 EST (carby) motor had no internals. All it does is 'distribute' the high tension spark from the coil to the plugs. The coil is driven by a computer inside the car (similar to an EFI computer) which gets its timing info from a crank sensor at the rear of the motor sensing the flywheel rotation. So unless you fit all of this gear, the dissy won't work in any other car. Hope this helps.
