Hi,
Just a note to let you all know that a friend and I have recently completed
this conversion.
The engine was to go into an AE86 sprinter but when it arrived common sense prevailed.
The conversion went fairly smooth, mount spacing is spot on and a modified commodore oem gearbox x-member goes straight in with the cressidas 4 spd electronic auto(just two new holes to drill.
The sump had to be modified becuase it had a rear bulge, this also necessitates a minor mod to the oil pickup but no dramas.
Tailshaft mod is easy.
The only real dramas are the cooling/ hydraulic systems. With the commodore radiator filling the cooling system becomes hard because it becomes way lower than the head. We sorted this with a small reservoir on a tower spliced into the heater plumbing.
The version we got (from Jap motorsport, great deal btw) had a power steer pump which we ran through a reservoir from a SV11 camry, but it also had a hydraulic pump incorporated into the water pump. This appears to have run the cooling fan in the cressida. We were unable to seperate it from the water pump so it is also running through a camry reservoir.
Apart from that it was plain sailing. Six coils etc makes for a very smooth motor and it idled beautifully out of the box.
Electrically we simply powered up the complete loom. It has lots of extra dash plugs off it but seems to run fine.
I would thoroughly recommend this conversion because I dont think the VH's are too bad in the handling department (I am more of a toyota fan than a commodore fan) and initial tests brought big smiles as the auto hit second and broke traction at half throttle (VH is 400 kg lighter than JZX81 cressida).
BTW we just used a VL tank and pump system in the VH.
Hi!
The car's just about ready for rego. Just tidying up the wiring and fitting
a gear shifter. The exaust is 3" mandrel from the cat back. Could only
fit 2.5" past the steering. Good fun to drive. Still on standard boost
but has no trouble breaking loose as it come's over 9psi. Peaks at about 12psi
now.No intercooler as of yet.
Needs LSD. Nice quiet idle but it does get loud. Camera's back. get some photos
soon.
Does anyone know if it is bad to run a powre steering rack dry? It's not hooked
up the pump. The pump just circulates through a reservoir.
Pid $2000 for the car. Sold the motor and box for $700.
$2000 for the 1jz-gte with box and computer and complete wiring.
$900 for exhaust
$450 for new fuel pumps an a vl tank with unleaded filler.
Plus some extra's like air filter and guages.
Approx $6000 when finished. The car is an sle so it's not to bad inside.
From the outside the only thing that gives it away is the larger exhaust.
